Journey to the Nymphwood

I admit, it’s hard to be a fantasy author and not get sucked into the world you’ve created. Since Tolkein, we’ve all wanted to build settings where a variety of our books can take place, allowing us to follow different characters across different cultures over different centuries. For me, that’s The Nymphwood. Now, to be fair, The Nymphwood isn’t the name of my world but of a land that has significant historical, theological, and cultural importance to all within it. And, as the name suggests, it is the verdant dwelling of Nymphs. Like the divas of Ancient Greek poetry, they are divine beings with a strong connection to nature who are occasionally known to conjugate with mortals. And while they are not characters in the story, the very essence of their existence powers much of the series’ fantastical elements.

This is probably a good time to declare that this is NOT a Young Adult series. While the term ‘Nymphwood’ may conjure images of faeries and secret gardens, this place is quite the opposite. It is a world driven by lust and bad decisions, filled with toxicity, selfishness, and adolescent debauchery. By no means am I saying the novels border on erotica, but there are plenty of adult situations from which the humor derives and the plots are catapulted.

Your entry point into The Nymphwood is my debut novel, Deep Lore. The novel has three primary storylines: one that follows a group of teenage boys on a medieval road trip, another following a halfling bounty huntress on a clandestine mission, and a third that follows a sex-addicted wizard who may or may not have brought about the end of the world. The novel, at its core, is humorous and whimsical but with a strong sense of adventure and a healthy dose of profound emotion.

The ‘series’ or ‘collection’ or whatever term I ultimately land on is called The Nymphwood Elegies, and any novel, trilogy, or short story I write that takes place in this world will be a ‘Nymphwood elegy.’ There is plenty of world-building and lore to delve into, and there will be larger mysteries for those so inclined to explore them, but on the surface, the stories have distinct and specific plots that will satisfy the casual reader who just wants a fun, engaging, and new experience in the fantasy genre.
